Where to: Newquay walks

It’s no secret that Newquay can offer endless miles of picturesque coastline, ideal for a walk no matter what day of the week. A pastime favoured by locals of all ages, whether it’s a chance to get the whole family together and blow away the cobwebs, or off on a romantic stroll, there are numerous routes to choose from.

The one with the pit stop

Nestled in the outskirts of Newquay, in a small village called Crantock, the polly joke loop covers all the bases. Not for the faint hearted, the route takes you from polly joke beach – a favourite of some local seals at the right time of year, up some steep commons on the cliff top, offering epic views of the coastline. You’ll head through the poppy fields to pop up on the outskirts of Crantock, where you’ll stumble upon The Bowgie Inn, perfect to pick up a local ale and refuel and admire the views back over towards Newquay.

The one with a range of distances

Pentire headland, home of a local hotspot, The Lewinnick Lodge is idea for shorter walks and has plenty of benches to sit and admire the views. A handy car park can let you drive straight up to the headland, or with Fistral Beach and The Gannel estuary on either side, you can easily extend the route should you wish. Following the well-worn pathway can take you right the end of the headland, where you feel totally surrounded by the sea and sky. The perfect sunset watching spot, or one of the most epic storm watching view -points – but always proceed with caution!

The different one

While all the tourists can find the coast line, not as many will adventure in to the woods. Colan woods is just on the outskirts of Newquay, and has over 1000 acres of woodland to explore. Ideal for kids and dogs, the woods is still shrouded with mystery as there are a range of ruins that the woods have taken over as their own. With many a local tale surrounding where the buildings came from and why they are still there, from puddle jumping to fairy spotting, there are endless hours of fun and games to be had!
